Marc Willers KC and Acland Bryant of the Garden Court Environmental Law & Climate Justice Team have co-written an article: 'Groundbreaking Judgment of European Court of Human Rights in Swiss Climate Case', featured in The Writ Magazine, published by the Law Society of Northern Ireland.

Marc Willers KC and Richard Harvey of Garden Court Chambers represented the Swiss Senior Women inVerein KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland in March 2024 as part of an international legal team, instructed by Greenpeace.

The Law Society of Northern Ireland and the Public Interest Litigation Support Project also hosted a CPD course on ‘Climate Justice’, with Marc Willers KC speaking.

In 2016 the KlimaSeniorinnen (the ‘Association of Swiss Senior Women for Climate Protection’, with 2500 members) together with four elderly women, filed a complaint against the Swiss government for its failure to take adequate steps to address climate change. That complaint was dismissed by the Swiss courts out of hand and so the applicants took their case to Strasbourg.

In March 2023, at a hearing before the ECtHR’s Grand Chamber, the applicants’ legal team presented agreed scientific evidence showing that older people - particularly elderly women - are more vulnerable to periods of intense heat.
