In June 2021, Ofsted was asked by the government to carry out a rapid review of sexual abuse in schools. Female students who responded to their questionnaire indicated that (in order of prevalence), the following types of harmful sexual behaviours happened “a lot” or “sometimes” between people their age:
- sexist name-calling (92%)
- being sent pictures or videos they did not want to see (88%)
- rumours about their sexual activity (81%)
- unwanted or inappropriate comments of a sexual nature (80%)
- being put under pressure to provide sexual images of themselves (80%)
- sexual assault of any kind (79%)
- having pictures or videos that they sent being shared more widely without their knowledge or consent (73%)
- feeling pressured to do sexual things that they did not want to (68%)
- unwanted touching (64%)
- being photographed or videoed without their knowledge or consent (59%)
- having pictures or videos of themselves that they did not know about being circulated (51%)
Sadly, for those of us who practice criminal law, these statistics will come as no surprise which is why in 2023, the Kalisher Trust has chosen to partner with Round Midnight on a new project aimed at educating young people about ideas around sexual assault, consent and misogyny.
Join us in person at Garden Court Chambers on Tuesday 28th February 2023 to hear more about this exciting new joint project between the Kalisher Trust and Round Midnight and learn how you might help or get involved. You’ll also get the chance to see the previous Virtual Decisions films on knife crime & criminal exploitation and experience virtual reality for yourself!
Round Midnight is a multi-award-winning creative arts and ed-tech company that communicates complex social issues through the arts and technology in new and innovative ways. Their “Virtual Decisions” programme uses immersive VR (virtual reality) to illustrate the impact of choice. Participants experience the consequences of their choices (using VR headsets), which immerses them in a unique situation, arising out of the decisions they have made. Following the VR experience, facilitators run workshops to explore the issues raised in more depth.
Round Midnight’s previous virtual reality in education projects (which focussed on both knife crime and criminal exploitation) have opened up conversations in schools around the pressing issues those films explore.
