Hossein Zahir KC of the Garden Court Chambers Crime Team, instructed by Lloyds PR Solicitors, appeared for Ivan Stoyanov.
Hossein Zahir KC appeared for defendant Ivan Stoyanov in this high-profile Russian espionage case.
The case, which was brought under the now repealed Official Secrets Act 1911, involved a group of Bulgarian nationals accused of ‘spying’ on opponents of Vladimir Putin and the Russian state.
The lead defendant, Orlin Roussev, was accused of widespread and systematic spying in conjunction with a Russian-based spy known as Jan Marsalek. Ivan Stoyanov was accused of surveillance abroad and in the UK. The case was factually and legally complex, and Hossein Zahir KC succeeded in achieving the lowest sentence of all of those charged.
