Alex is an immigration and public law barrister who provides advice and representation in all areas of asylum, immigration and nationality law. He has substantial experience in complex cases involving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement, the refusal and deprivation of British citizenship.

Alex is routinely involved in statutory appeals and judicial review proceedings. He has successfully challenged executive decisions and policies and his written and oral advocacy has earned praise from both clients and the judiciary.

Alex has worked in cases involving national security and closed materials procedures. He is familiar with the Justice and Security Act 2013 framework and has appeared before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC).

Alongside his litigation and advisory practice, Alex has written a number of case notes for the peer-reviewed Journal of Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law. He has also authored articles and practice notes for well-known legal publications.

Alex is a co-convenor of Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA)’s Courts and Tribunals Working Group. In this role, he chairs meetings with members and attends user group meetings with the judiciary and HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS). He also delivers training for ILPA members, practitioners and organisations.

Overview

With over 10 years of experience in the field, Alex’s practice and expertise covers the broad spectrum of asylum, immigration and nationality law.

Alex provides advice and representation in all areas of immigration law. He specialises in complex cases involving:

  • Article 8 of the ECHR, e.g. appeals against the refusal of leave and deportation
  • The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) and UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement, e.g. appeals against the refusal or cancellation of leave under Appendix EU and the deportation of European Economic Area (EEA) nationals and their family members
  • Partners, children and adult dependent relatives
  • Victims of trafficking
  • Suitability refusals under the Immigration Rules
  • Nationality law, status tracing, adoption and surrogacy
  • Refusal of naturalisation on good character grounds
  • Deprivation of British citizenship and revocation of Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Alex authors case notes, practice notes and articles on immigration and nationality law. He provides training to practitioners and organisations.

Alex is a co-convenor of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA)’s Courts and Tribunals Working Group.

Home Office’s ‘Realistic Prospect’ policy guidance for Zambrano carers held unlawful
Maisiri (EUSS; Zambrano; ‘Realistic Prospect’) Zimbabwe [2024] UKUT 235 (IAC)
Successful appeal involving a collateral challenge to the Secretary of State’s Zambrano EUSS guidance. The Upper Tribunal concluded that the guidance had been wrong since 14 December 2022. The guidance was subsequently amended in light of the judgment.

Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC)

Overview

Alex represents individuals in closed materials proceedings before SIAC. He has been involved in review applications challenging the Secretary of State’s decisions to refuse leave or naturalisation on the grounds of national security.

Background

Alex has a multi-jurisdictional background. Before pursuing a career at the Bar of England and Wales, he completed a law degree at the University of Athens and registered as a trainee lawyer at the Bar of Athens.

During his academic years, Alex participated in international mooting competitions both as a competitor and a mooting coach, and obtained multiple awards.

Prior to qualifying as a barrister, Alex worked at a reputable legal aid immigration firm, representing individuals in immigration detention and subject to removal.

Alex has delivered seminars on various topics of immigration law, including statutory appeals in the Upper Tribunal (IAC), long residence, s. 3C of the Immigration Act 1971, paragraph 39E of the Immigration Rules and the validity of applications for leave.
