Immigration Law

Overview

Matthew practises across the full range of immigration and asylum work, with a particular focus on cases engaging human rights protections under the ECHR, deportation proceedings, asylum claims, and challenges to Home Office decisions by way of judicial review. He also practises in public law and community care, often in cases where immigration status intersects with entitlement to services.

Matthew accepts instructions across the following areas of immigration and asylum law:

  • Judicial Review of Home Office Decisions
    Challenges to unlawful immigration decisions in the Administrative Court and Upper Tribunal, including refusals of leave, certification decisions, unlawful detention, and systemic policy challenges.
  • Immigration Detention
    Challenging unlawful detention under the Hardial Singh principles, bail applications before the First-tier Tribunal, and civil claims for false imprisonment — a specialism of the chambers’ broader immigration detention practice.
  • Leave to Remain & Settlement
    Advising and representing individuals in appeals and applications relating to leave to remain on family and private life grounds, long residence, and the points-based system, including fee waiver issues and deception allegations.

Background

Matthew holds a degree in Law from the University of Cambridge and a MA in Interpreting: British Sign Language (BSL)/ English.  Matthew previously worked as an advocate and BSL interpreter supporting deaf and disabled people for the past 15 years. This includes volunteer roles at St John’s Deaf Community Centre and the BSL Act Now! Campaign.

Matthew previously completed a mini pupillage at Garden Court Chambers and has shadowed barristers at various chambers.
