Both defendants faced an allegation that they conspired with two convicted defendants in order to smuggle 17 Albanians into the UK.

The prosecution stated that the case against both was overwhelming. However, after a 6 week trial and unrelenting work by the defence teams both defendants were found not guilty of the conspiracy allegation.

They were also found not guilty of separate counts, relating to events that took place a year later, of assisting unlawful Albanian immigrants to breach immigration laws.

One of the defendants was convicted of employing two illegal immigrants in his construction business, and acquitted in respect of a third employee.

The case was reported by Daily Star.

James Scobie QC and Keir Monteith QC are member of the Garden Court Chambers Crime team.
