This unique, practitioner-led conference brings together leading lawyers, academics, campaigners and policy experts for a deep dive into the latest trends and developments in using international and transnational law to tackle environmental destruction and climate change.

Insight for effective legal strategies
If you want expert discussion and practical insight into how legal principles might be translated into effective legal strategies and using of the law to protect communities and hold states and corporations to account, this conference is for you.

On the day
We will explore how legal strategies are evolving across jurisdictions, critical perspectives on the law and its utility for environmental justice, and what lessons can be learned.

  • The role of international criminal law in challenging climate and environmental harm, including:
    • The development and practical use of ecocide law
    • The role of the International Criminal Court, and domestic courts applying international law
    • The relationship between environmental destruction, protest, criminalisation and accountability
  •  International civil and public law strategies, including:
    • Using international climate judgments and advisory opinions
    • How global climate principles can be made effective in domestic claims
    • Causation, attribution and responsibility in climate litigation
    • The use of evidence in cases involving environmental destruction
    • Remedies, reparations, loss and damage, and accountability

We will also look at the experiences of communities on the frontline of the climate crisis, including those living in Small Island States, where rising sea levels and environmental degradation present immediate and existential threats.
