Please join members of the Garden Court Youth Justice & Child Rights Team for a hybrid, multidisciplinary discussion to explore how best to represent child victims of criminal exploitation. The topics will include making and using National Referral Mechanism (NRM) referrals, abuse of process arguments and judicial review.
Our speaker panel will examine the legal landscape in light of V.C.L. AND A.N. v. the United Kingdom (applications nos. 77587/12 and 74603/12) and the domestic cases of R v AAD, AAH, and AAI [2022] EWCA Crim 106, R v Brecani [2021] EWCA Crim 731 and DS [2020] EWCA Crim 285; [2021] 1 WLR 303.
This is a hybrid event, therefore attendees have the option of joining online via Zoom or attending in person at Garden Court Chambers.

Henry Blaxland KC, Garden Court Chambers
Widely recognised as a leading criminal silk, Henry Blaxland KC is ranked as a Star Individual in Chambers and Partners 2023, London (Bar), Crime and Tier 1 in the Legal 500 2023 for Crime. Henry frequently represents children and young people charged with serious criminal offences at trial. In his appellate practice, he has been at the forefront of the development of the law regarding the non-prosecution of victims of trafficking, particularly as it affects children.
Kate Aubrey-Johnson, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers
Kate is a youth justice specialist barrister and mediator at Garden Court Chambers with experience as a criminal defence practitioner and public lawyer. Kate is the former Director of the Youth Justice Legal Centre (YJLC) at Just for Kids Law. Kate is co-author of the leading textbook Youth Justice Law and Practice (LAG, 2019) and is regularly called upon to give lectures and deliver training.
Jennifer Twite, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers
Jennifer is a specialist in youth justice and children’s rights. Jennifer has been involved in a number of high-profile cases involving the rights of children within the criminal justice system at all levels up to the Supreme Court. She co-authored Youth Justice Law and Practice (LAG, 2019) and sits as a Deputy District Judge in the Magistrates’ Court.
Audrey Cherryl Mogan, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers
Audrey Cherryl Mogan is a criminal defence barrister with experience representing vulnerable child defendants, particularly those in care and with mental health issues, as well as children who show indications of being victims of trafficking and modern slavery. Audrey has been funded by the Strategic Legal Fund for Vulnerable Migrant Children to undertake pre-litigation research on a number of issues that overlap crime and immigration.

Lee is a very experienced, tenacious and persuasive criminal defence advocate. Lee has appeared on behalf of defendants accused of serious offences including attempted rape and kidnap, as well as being led by King’s Counsel in a number of murder trials.
