This event will cover:

  • Trans and non-binary people who face discrimination in the workplace: protections and remedies;
  • Anti-trans beliefs in the workplace;
  • Future of legislation/development in these areas: biological sex in Equality Act 2010 and separate legislation for non-binary people.

Speakers

Nicola Braganza KC, Garden Court Chambers (Chair)
Nicola is recognised as a leading barrister specialising in Equality and Discrimination Law, Public Law and Human Rights. Her broad practice spans the areas of Employment, Education, Community Care, Immigration and Asylum Law. Nicola has considerable experience in bringing complex and large-scale challenges against the state, including civil claims for damages on behalf of individuals and groups. She has particular expertise in representing highly vulnerable adults and children.  Nicola sits as a Fee-paid Judge in the First Tier Tribunal (Special Educational Needs and Disability) and in the Employment Tribunal. She regularly provides training and workshops on Equality and Discrimination. 

Oscar Davies, Garden Court Chambers
Oscar is ranked as a Tier 1 ‘Rising Star’ in the Legal 500. Oscar undertakes a range of civil and public law work, including employment, human rights, commercial and property/housing. Oscar is the first publicly recognised non-binary barrister in the UK. Oscar has lots of experience representing trans and non-binary clients in a number of areas in civil and public law. In 2024, Oscar was shortlisted for LGBTQ+ Champion of the Year (Individual); and DE&I Rising Star of the Year (Legal 500 ESG Awards). Oscar was voted as one of 'Top 10 Outstanding Contribution to LGBT+ Life' by the British LGBT Awards 2022 for their work as an advocate and activist for non-binary rights.

Oscar is a contributor to the second edition of ‘A Practical Guide to Transgender Law’ by Robin Moira White & Nicola Newbegin. Oscar advocates for trans and non-binary rights and legal change in this area and creates resources via their social media. Oscar is often asked to interview, speak on panels and seminars regarding developments in areas that affect trans and non-binary people. Oscar is currently writing a book on non-binary recognition and how the law may better convey and deconstruct the gender/sex binary. Alice Ramsay, Leigh Day
Alice is a Senior Associate Solicitor at the law firm Leigh Day.  She qualified in September 2011 and specialises in employment and discrimination law.  She has particular expertise in advising people affected by gender identity discrimination.  She has acted for many trans and non-binary clients in cases involving discrimination in the workplace and in the context of accessing services, including healthcare and financial services.
