This seminar will aim to help to hone your advocacy skills, including how to navigate cases involving vulnerable parties. It is aimed at newly qualified Solicitors/advocates with less than 3 years PQE but might be a handy refresher for those who are slightly more experienced. The session will be interactive and will provide attendees with the opportunity to ask questions.

Speakers

Anna Hefford, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers (Chair)
Anna is a family law practitioner focusing on cases involving serious sexual abuse and non-accidental injuries to children, including those with very complex medical evidence. In addition to her Public Law work, Anna undertakes Private Law cases in relation to children, particularly in those cases where a Guardian is involved. Anna has extensive experience of representing both parents and children in these proceedings. She has a particular interest in and experience of representing parents and children who are particularly vulnerable, including parents who are very young, and parents and children with additional needs, such as learning difficulties and mental health difficulties.

Amanda Meusz, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers
Amanda’s practice focuses on representing  vulnerable parties in complex public law children cases and complex high conflict private law cases including disputes in relation to medical treatment and the provision of services for children with disabilities. She is regularly instructed in cases of involving serious NAI, child death, FII and child sexual abuse. Amanda has developed an innovative trauma informed and trauma responsive approach to the representation of vulnerable clients. She regularly provides training to participants in the family justice system on the impact of trauma and how to ensure effective participation. She is committed to providing a trauma responsive approach to survivors of domestic abuse, to members of marginalised communities and to care experienced parents. Amanda is regularly nominated for awards she  won Family Law Case of the Year at the Family Law Awards 2022. She acted for the children’s guardian in the Supreme Court case of H-W (Children) (No 2) [2022] UKSC 17. Amanda won a award for  Mentor of the Year in Women and Diversity in Law Awards 2026. Amanda is a champion and mentor for Lawyers Who Care, the UK’s first mentoring organisation for care-experienced aspiring lawyers.

Harvey Daniel, Solicitor, National Legal Service
Harvey is a solicitor specialising in Family Law, with particular experience representing parents across Public and Private Law Child proceedings. Since qualifying as a solicitor in June 2024, Harvey has a developed a busy caseload, representing clients at all stages of proceedings, including undertaking advocacy. He also completed his Solicitors Qualification Examination alongside working full-time as a paralegal and is therefore able to offer insight into balancing studies alongside maintaining a demanding practice. Furthermore, Harvey’s background in domestic abuse alongside his practice in Public Law Child proceedings has led to a particular passion in representing more vulnerable clients, including those with substance misuse difficulties, as well as mental health difficulties. Harvey is committed to offering the highest standard of client care, as reflected in his many positive client reviews. He also enjoys undertaking legal research on current legal developments and more novel areas of law and regularly contributes to legal content for his firm.
