In March 2015, the Justice Committee found that 39% of women who are trying to escape male violence and were eligible for legal aid, could not access it. This event offers the opportunity to do the following:

  • Ask the new government what it will do to safeguard the lives of women trying to flee male violence
  • Discuss the UK’s obligations under the Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and the impact of the legal aid cuts on women
  • Consider how you and your organisation can assist in gathering evidence to show why these cuts must be reversed

We will also be showing the Justice Alliance Legal Aid video and the Guardian Legal Aid Superheroes video.

Speakers

Chair: Vivienne Hayes, CEO, Women’s Resource Centre

Pragna Patel, Southhall Black Sisters

Cris McCurley, Solicitor and Partner, Ben Hoare Bell

Smita Shah, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers
