New Art Studio is a therapeutic art studio for refugees and asylum seekers in London, inspired by the freedom and power of the imagination. Founded in 2014, the Studio is a unique space offering a holistic approach to recovery and personal integration through art therapy and community. Its members have survived imprisonment, torture, loss of family, country and identity and now face a restricted life in the UK. Through art-making and developing meaningful relationships, often over a number of years, they support members in the group in rebuilding their lives following the trauma of forced migration.
Many of New Art Studio's members never made art before joining the studio, while some have been prosecuted because of their art. The studio atmosphere of non-judgemental creativity brings out unknown and unexplored abilities. Making art helps to put thoughts, emotions and experiences onto paper, to be seen. The studio provides a space of solidarity and creativity. The process of making art socially allows time and space for thinking and feeling. Painting not only the traumas of the past but to dream of new ways of being.
New Art Studio offers its members the opportunity to exhibit and see exhibiting as a part of how their therapeutic art studio supports members’ mental health and personal development, to grow in confidence as artists and as active members of the community. It is also an opportunity for the public to gain a better understanding of what it is like to seek asylum and live as a refugee in the UK. All the artwork in the exhibition is for sale.
