We are delighted to announce that Hamish McCallum has joined Garden Court Chambers as a new tenant.
Hamish McCallum is a civil liberties and criminal defence barrister with particular expertise in Protest Rights, Public Inquiries and Inquests. He is ranked as a Rising Star for Crime by the Legal 500 (2025).
Hamish is committed to fighting for justice on behalf of his clients and is a passionate and persuasive advocate who is routinely instructed in high profile cases and those involving difficult evidential issues and novel points of law.
He is currently instructed in the UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry and has a busy Crown Court practice, focusing on protest-related offences and cases engaging human rights and civil liberties issues.
Before coming to the bar, Hamish worked at Hickman & Rose Solicitors as a human rights paralegal, provided research assistance at JUSTICE, and was previously a Senior Adviser to a Member of Parliament.
Hamish is regularly instructed in the full spectrum of criminal cases including murder, drug supply, serious assault, fraud, driving and Theft Act offences. He also has considerable experience of public order and protest-related cases including public nuisance, criminal damage and Public Order Act offences.
Hamish is experienced in representing bereaved families in Article 2 Inquests and Public Inquiries (including the UK Covid-19 and Grenfell Tower inquiries), has represented protest clients in contempt proceedings, and has advised in two High Court appeals. He also undertakes actions against the police, and welcomes instructions in civil claims and public law challenges related to the policing of protests or the imposition of injunctions.
Hamish is committed to pro bono work, having been awarded the Sibel Dedezade Award for Pro Bono, and has supported Free Representation Unit (FRU) (for whom he also fundraised by running the London Marathon!).
