The article “Tackling homelessness early” explores the new prevention and relief duties, which are likely to come into force in April 2018.

She comments that to be effective, those duties will require local housing authorities to make extensive use of the private rented sector and that hard-pressed local authorities, especially in London, will struggle to find accommodation that is affordable, particularly for applicants dependent on housing benefit.

The full article can be found on the Legal Action website.

Liz is the co-author of Housing Allocation and Homelessness (Luba, Davies, and Johnston, Jordans, 4th edition, 2016) and was a consultant to Crisis which drafted the first version of the Homelessness Reduction Act.

Liz Davies is a member of the Garden Court Chambers Housing Team.
