Participants were specialist practitioners in the arena of trafficking – from a large range of nations – and from a wide range of organisations – NGOs, social services, lawyers, labour inspectors, financial investigators, police forces, UNHCR and the UN.

The aim of the simulation was to consider and use a multi-agency approach and model in the identification of victims of human trafficking, particularly in the fields of labour and sexual exploitation.

A huge thanks is owed to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Carabinieri for their hospitality and support in the simulation.

A short video on the simulation exercise can be seen here: ‘3rd OSCE Live simulation based training course in “Combating Human Trafficking along Migration Routes” at CoESPU – Vicenza‘.

Paramjit is a criminal defence practitioner specialising in the issues arising from human trafficking. One of the hardest aspects within the implementation of the Modern Slavery Act and the protection mechanisms and rights available to victims of trafficking and labour exploitation is early identification.

It is key that in order to ensure protection of individual’s rights, indicator tools are used by agencies who often have first point of contact with victims of trafficking and exploitation and to do so in an advanced multi agency approach.

Paramjit Ahluwalia is part of the Garden Court Chambers Crime Team.
