Abigail Holt and Sonali Naik KC of Garden Court Chambers will be in Málaga this week for The European Circuit’s annual conference, hosted at the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Málaga.
Hugh Mercer KC, the UK Judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg will deliver the keynote address.
Abigail Holt is Leader of the European Circuit and will introduce the conference theme: ‘Justice and the Rule of Law in a World That Does Not Make Sense’, taking inspiration from Picasso who said: “The world today doesn’t make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?”
Picasso’s revolutionary way of seeing the world and brilliant creativity sparked prolific and novel art. The conference aims to give equally creative lawyers space and time to see the bigger picture and find inspiration when grappling with legal problems.
Abigail will hand over to José María Davó Fernandez, Emeritus Dean of the Málaga Bar, who has been very active in the Spanish Bar at a national level and also in the CCBE (Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe).
Abigail will then chair a session involving European Bar leaders: Kirsty Brimelow KC Chair (Bar Council of England & Wales), Stéphane Haziza (Member of the Paris Bar Council), Michala Plachká (Vice-Chair, Czech Bar Association), Seamus Clarke SC (Chair of the Council of The Bar of Ireland), Adolfo Martos Gross (Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Málaga & founding partner, Martos & Gross Abogados) & Noemí Alarcón Velasco (Vice President of the CCBE & Director of NAV Consultores).
Joint Head of Garden Court Chambers, Sonali Naik KC, will chair a session on Recent Developments in EU Migration and Asylum Law with Noemí Alarcón Velasco (Spain), David Conlan Smyth SC (Ireland) and Benjamin Seifert (UK).
The conference dinner will be preceded by a very special offering from Professor Oana Stefan, Director of the School of European Law at Kings College London, on the topic of European Law and love.
