The High Court has quashed the Home Office's decision to refuse to provide accommodation for a student asylum seeker in Norwich in judicial review proceedings.

The claimant is a student studying for a demanding Master's degree after being awarded a highly competitive scholarship at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. However, the Secretary of State for Home Department (SSHD) proposed relocating him to places far enough away to make attending his scholarship-funded Master's program unfeasible.

The claimant, an Iraqi national, has resided in Norwich since his arrival in the United Kingdom in a "small boat" in October 2022. He was previously a lecturer at an educational institute in Iraq, teaching Kurdology.

On 26 February 2024, permission for judicial review was granted by Poole J and the interim order of Lang J (preventing his removal from Norwich) was extended.

The Court ordered the Home Office to remake the decision and to pay the claimant's legal costs.
