Civil Liberties and Human Rights Barristers

We are looking for expressions of interest from all levels of experience to join our very busy team working in civil liberties and human rights.

Garden Court Chambers is a leading multi-disciplinary set with a strong belief in human rights and social justice. We are recognised as one of the leading chambers in the UK specialising in civil liberties and human rights.

We are looking for expressions of interest from all levels of experience to join our very busy team working in civil liberties and human rights.

As a large set with strength and depth across many disciplines, there is an opportunity for barristers to continue or develop their practice in other areas beyond civil liberties and human rights, depending on the need of each team.

Our Civil Liberties and Human Rights Law Team specialises in public inquiries, inquests and claims against public authorities, with our work carried out nationwide. We are at the forefront of challenging infringements of rights through strategic and leading cases across the range of work in this area, including the developments in protest law, climate change and discrimination claims involving children, women, race and nationality and disabilities.

We collaborate with colleagues across practice areas, especially public law, to identify areas for challenge.

We are regularly instructed on high profile inquiries such as the Grenfell Inquiry, the Undercover Policing Inquiry, the Brook House Inquiry, the Child Sexual Abuse Inquiry, the Manchester Arena Inquiry and the ongoing UK Covid-19 Inquiry.

We have a proud history of winning cases on behalf of claimants in domestic, pan-European and international courts. Our cases have advanced the law and we have overturned great injustices in landmark inquests and judgments.

We act in inquests, typically those with juries and in which article 2 is engaged, involving complex state failures, and civil actions arising from these claims. We are looking for barristers to benefit from our leading reputation in inquests, alongside other practice interests.

Our civil liberties and human rights barristers have long worked with campaigning and other organisations such as INQUEST, Liberty, JUSTICE, Just for Kids Law, and the British Institute of Human Rights. We welcome developing relationships with other NGOs to support their concerns through legal challenges. A number of barristers are approved counsel for the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

We are seeking to recruit outstanding civil liberties and human rights advocates, particularly with expertise and/or an interest in representing bereaved families at inquests. We welcome applications from practitioners of all levels of experience. The successful candidate(s) can expect to build or enhance a rewarding practice advancing the rights of others within a supportive and engaged team. They should be committed to practising within the principles and ethos of Garden Court Chambers.

To apply, please complete and return both the application form and equal opportunities monitoring form to Mia Hakl-Law, Chief Operating Officer, at miah@gclaw.co.uk.

Applications will be considered on a first come, first served basis.
