A reception in Parliament was hosted by Abtisam Mohamed MP last month to formally welcome Gazan students who have recently arrived in the UK to commence their post-graduate studies, following sustained campaigning and extensive pre-action correspondence to secure their evacuation and entry clearance.
Sonali Naik KC, Maha Sardar and Maria Moodie of Garden Court Chambers, who represented 40 Gazan students, were honoured to be invited. They previously secured success on behalf of students recently evacuated to the UK, with a further important legal development in the case of R (Manar al-Houbi) v SSHD and SSFCDO.
The reception captured the breadth of solidarity and practical commitment that has made this possible. MPs, campaigners, NGOs and representatives from several universities came together around a shared recognition of the fundamental importance of education, particularly for those whose lives and learning have been upended by conflict.
It was moving to hear from the students themselves about their achievements, the discipline and determination that brought them here, and the ambitions they carry forward, not least to harness their educational achievements to rebuild their country.
Garden Court Chambers sends its warmest wishes to all the students as they begin this new chapter.
