Award-winning barrister and accomplished climate scholar Sangeetha Iengar has been appointed Director of the newly formed Institute for Law and Policy on Climate Mobility at the University of Oxford.
The Institute, founded by Sangeetha, brings together leading experts to develop rights-based legal and policy responses to climate mobility.
Sangeetha specialises in public law, asylum, immigration, and international human rights law with a practice dedicated to promoting rights of the most disadvantaged groups.
Authored by Sangeetha, the Institute has recently published a position statement, Habitability: the lens through which climate mobility should be understood, arguing that policy must ensure that people can live safely and with dignity, whether they remain in their communities or move elsewhere.
Sangeetha will be attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting from the 1-4 November, where the Institute will publish its policy paper on Governing for Climate Mobility.
Alongside her practice at the Bar, Sangeetha sits as a fee-paid Judge of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber and is Senior Research Scholar at Yale University and Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, focused on climate-related migration.
